Every girl loves a good, stylish pair of shoes. And even some guys do too. In Kinky Boots, now playing at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Charlie Price (Steven Booth) is out to save the men’s shoe factory he inherited in Northampton England when in walks Lola (Kyle Taylor Parker), a glamazon drag queen, a niche market that is under served in the shoe industry. As Charlie points out, the drag queen community needs high heels with better quality and made to withstand the weight of a man. Along with Lauren (Lindsay Nicole Chambers), a spunky worker who has a crush on him they rally the blue collar factory workers and sell them on the plan to make shoes for drag queens in order to save their jobs.

Based on the 2005 British movie, Kinky Boots doesn’t have the normal story arc of conflict needing resolution like most musicals. Instead, Kinky Boots has a powerful message to share…just be you. Live your life to make yourself happy and the rest will fall into place. Lola even quotes Oscar Wilde “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken”.

With a book by Harvey Fierstein (Disney’s Newsies and La Cage Aux Folles,) Kinky Boots is full of laughs and heart. Pop legend Cyndi Lauper provides the music and lyrics tinged with an 80’s flair and ready for a dance party. As Lola, Kyle Taylor Parker brings the house down with “Hold Me in Your Heart” a Whitney Houston styled ballad. Lindsay Nicole Chambers steals the show as Lauren with her love sick and comedic inspired song “The History of Wrong Guys”.

Kinky Boots is sure to put a smile on your face and in your heart. Don’t miss it during its limited run in Minneapolis.

Kinky Boots is playing at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis through Sunday, August 2. For more information on the show visit Hennepin Theatre Trust’s website.
